Mm! Give me some more ayakashi, anime! Er, but . . . comedy works too! *cough, cough* Anyway, does anybody remember Barakamon from last season? Well get ready for another follow-up to that anime! Not only is Daisuke Ono (the one who voices Handa-sensei) voicing Kokkuri-san, but we have nearly the same humor here!
Our story revolves around a girl named Kohina, a seemingly emotionless girl who claims she is a doll. She one day summons an ayakashi named Kokkuri-san, a game that she was taught. Kokkuri does end up appearing and the banter begins! Kohina, while being very much like a blank slate, is actually more human than she thinks she is as she has fun with Kokkuri-san and enjoys her time with him (though she doesn't realize it).
Look at them cheeks stretch. Even Luffy would be impressed. |
Next up we have Kokkuri-san himself. Very much like Handa-sensei from Barakamon, Kokkuri-san is a passionate person with a kind heart (though the bad temper is now gone in this anime). After seeing Kohina's situation of living alone and depending on ramen for food, Kokkuri-san decides to "haunt" her and take care of her, developing a bond with her.
I am totally getting Barakamon vibes right now. |
Now, unlike Barakamon, Gugure! Kokkuri-san focuses more on comedy than slice of life feels. While it isn't as heartwarming as the former, Gugure! is a very funny anime that will give you a few giggles here and there. For example, in this one bit where Kohina pulls out a lightsaber.
And this is the part where everyone goes, "What the hell?" |
While it certainly does not take the place of Barakamon in terms of slice of life, Gugure! is more comedy-focused and does a good job with its gags and jokes. I'll be looking forward to seeing the other ayakashi that will be coming into Kohina's life, and wondering if this show will be deeper than we think. And with that, take care, otakus!
